With its season opener just three weeks away, the University of Houston baseball team will hold its first practice of the 2001 campaign Saturday, January 13, at 9:00 a.m. at Cougar Field.
Houston head coach Rayner Noble welcomes back nine returning lettermen from last season's 48-18 team that hosted an NCAA Super Regional. No less than 19 newcomers have joined the squad for 2001 as UH attempts to duplicate the Conference USA regular season and tournament championships the team won a year ago.
The Cougars will open the 2001 season February 2-4 with three games at the fabulous Enron Field, the downtown home of major league baseball's Houston Astros. The games are part of a six-team college tournament featuring former member's of the old Southwest Conference including Baylor, Rice, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. UH will face No. 17 ranked Baylor at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. Houston then meets Texas at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 3) and Texas Tech at 12 noon on Sunday.
Fans should call the Cougar Ticket Office at 713-743-9444 for Enron tournament ticket prices. Season tickets for home games at Cougar Field are also available. In 2001 Houston hosts regional powers Rice (twice), Baylor, Texas A&M and NCAA Tournament participant Southwest Texas State. West coast powrers USC (a College World Series participant last season) and Cal State Fullerton will play three-game series at Cougar Field in March.
UH will have more C-USA road games (15) than home games (12). The
Cougars will be home for series with No. 20 ranked Southern Miss,
Charlotte, UAB and Saint Louis.
