Baseball's Dempsay Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List
Jan. 28, 2010
HOUSTON - University of Houston junior closer Chase Dempsay was named to the 40-man preseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year award, as announced by the organization on Thursday. The award is given each year to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The list will be updated on April 19 and at the conclusion of the regular season five finalists will be announced on June 2, with the winner being announced on opening day of the College World Series, June 19. Dempsay set freshman records for 11 saves and eight wins in his first season at UH, on his way to becoming one of only four players in school history at that time to record double-digit saves in a single season. For his performance as a freshman, the Baytown, Texas, native earned multiple preseason awards in 2009. However, as a sophomore he spent much of the season in a middle relief role, recording two saves with a 4-0 record. With the departure of Donnie Joseph who was selected in the MLB Draft, Dempsay will return to the closer role in his junior campaign. Dempsay is one of four Conference USA relief pitchers named to the preseason watch list. He joins East Carolina junior right-hander Seth Simmons, Southern Miss junior right-hander Collin Cargill and Tulane junior right-hander Nick Pepitone are C-USA's representatives on the watch list. The Cougars will open the 2010 season on Feb. 19-21 when they host a three-game series against Texas State at Cougar Field.
