UH To Face Texas Saturday Night
Houston, TX -- With eight true freshman making their Division I debut Friday afternoon at Enron Field, the University of Houston baseball team dropped its season-opener to No,. 17 ranked Baylor 16-7 at the Astros Collegiate Classic (Feb. 2). It was the third time for the Cougars to drop the season-opener in the last four years.
Baylor exploded for nine runs in the first five innings and then added another seven runs in the final three frames. After a walk and a fielder's choice in the top of the first, the Bears had two men on base without a base hit. Catcher Kelly Shoppach then crushed a pitch by Nick Torina for a three-run homer to give Baylor a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Bear shortstop Mark Saccomanno then clubbed a Torina pitch over Enron Field's short leftfield fence to make the score 6-0.
Baylor added three more runs in the fifth but the Cougars got on the board with three in the bottom of that inning. Offensively UH was led by junior Chris Klosterman's three hits. The team had 13 overall but tthe Cougars could not overcome the early deficit.
Houston, 0-1, will next face the Texas Longhorns as action in the Classic continues on Saturday, February 3.
