Houston Baseball Team Thumps Texas Tech 11-5
Cougars Slug Season-High 13 Hits For Second Consecutive Win
HOUSTON, TX (Feb. 4) -- The University of Houston baseball team slugged a season-high 13 hits and posted a season-high 11 runs to win its second game in a row, an 11-5 decision over Texas Tech in its final game at the Astros Collegiate Classic Tournment Sunday afternoon at Enron Field.
The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the top of the first for freshman starting pitcher Gene Flores and then exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth on the strength of four hits and a walk. After freshman right fielder Sam Mitchell singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs, freshman designated hitter Gabe Lucas drove in his third run of the day with a bases-loaded single to make the score 7-2.
Lucas, who is the son of Cougar baseball great Ike Lucas, also drove in Houston's first run of the game in the top of the first inning with a triple to left-center field. He finished the day with a career-high three hits to go along with the three RBI. Junior third baseman Chris Klosterman also had three hits and finished the weekend tournament hitting a team-best .583 (7-for-12).
UH freshman pitcher Gene Flores used the offensive support to record his first career win in his Division I debut. The standout from Corpus Christi allowed seven hits, a walk and struck out five working 5.0 innings. The Cougars improved to 2-1 oerall after defeating Texas Saturday night 3-2. Texas Tech fell to 3-2.
Houston will next face west coast power San Diego State on the road on Friday, February 9, in the first of a three-game series next week. First pitch with the Aztecs will be at 5:00 p.m., Pacific time, from Tony Gwynn Stadium of the SDSU campus.
