Aztecs Rally In 8th; Cougars Strand 13 Runners In One-Run Loss

San Diego, CA -- The University of Houston baseball team held San Diego State in check for seven innings but the Aztecs rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth off the Cougar bullpen to claim a 3-2 win Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. Houston will get a rematch in game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead for Brad Sullivan, a true freshman making his first collegiate start. The native of Nederland, Texas, was sharp registering 91-mph on the speed gun and holding the defending Mountain West Conference champions to just one hit with five strikeouts and a walk in working 5.0 innings. Sullivan had three 1-2-3 innings and left with a lead, but the Aztecs touched the Cougar bullpen for three runs on four hits late in the game.

Needing only six outs to notch a third win in four games, Houston turned to its bullpen. The Aztecs however had different plans and in the eighth scratched out two runs on one hit to take a 3-2 lead. SDSU loaded the bases off UH freshman Austin Faught, who was then replaced by Matt Hooper.

Hooper did his job in getting a potential double-play grounder, but the ball rolled under the glove of third baseman Chris Klosterman and into left field. Two unearned runs came across to give the Aztecs their first lead of the game. Faught was tabbed with the loss while Sullivan got a no-decision in his starting debut.

Offensively Houston managed only four hits off SDSU pitching. The Cougars however could not take advantage of 10 walks and ended up stranding 13 men on base. UH's lone runs were when Sam Mitchell walked and scored after a balk, fielder's choice and wild pitch in the third. In the top of the fourth Josh Snook reached base on a fielder's choice and eventually scored from third on a ground out.

With the loss Houston fell to 2-2. San Diego State improved to 2-2. The teams will continue the three-game weekend series on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on the internet on the SDSU web site at goAztecs.com.
