Baton Rouge, LA - The University of Houston and LSU baseball teams combined for 31 hits but it was the No. 3 ranked Tigers that had the more timely hitting for four big innings on the way to a 14-6 win Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. With the victory LSU completes a sweep of a three-game weekend series, avenging the series sweep by UH last season.
The Cougars posted 15 hits on the day to LSU's 16, but as was the case in all three games of the series Houston had trouble converting the base runners to runs on the scoreboard. After leaving a combined 22 men on base the first two games of the series, UH stranded another 10 men on Sunday. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second but the Tigers responded with four in the bottom of the frame and another three in the third.
Houston could have avoided the the scoring outburst in the second but a fielding error with two away prolonged a Tiger rally. In the very next at bat after the error, second baseman Mike Fontenot crushed a three-run homer to left to make the score 4-1. After the three-run third LSU (now 5-2) also had three-run innings in the fifth and eight. UH fell to 3-7 with its fourth-staright loss. Five different Cougars had two or more hits. Sophomore catcher Chris Snyder connected for his second home run of the season as well as a double.
The Cougars will next face crosstown rival Rice at Reckling Park on Wednesday, February 21. First pitch in game two of the Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series is slated for 4:00 p.m.
