Southwest Texas State clubbed 14 hits on the day, highlighted by a pair of home runs by senior third baseman Bryan Kent. Kent scored a total of four times while teammate Evan Pierce was 3-for-6 with a three-run triple. After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bobcats exploded for five runs in the top of the third. It was more than enough room for Olivera, who allowed only one run working 8.0 innings, scattering eight hits with two walks and striking out four. Houston did not score its lone run until Olivera had been removed in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Cougars were led by sophomore catcher Chris Snyder, a 2001 candidate for the Smith Award. Snyder was 2-for-3 and threw out a runner attempting to steal. First baseman Nathan Mitchell was 2-for-4.
The teams complete the series Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the internet at www.tsrn.com.
