PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After helping contribute to four wins last week, Houston Baseball senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Ford was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Ford, a lefty, made two appearances during the week’s four wins, which included a brilliant relief effort at No. 11 Rice, which gave him his first win of the 2014 season. Ford tossed 5.1 shutout innings at Rice, allowing just two hits, no walks to accompany two strikeouts to improve to 1-0.
The Richmond, Texas native went on to pitch 2.2 shutout relief innings in a come-from-behind win vs. Michigan on Sunday afternoon. He allowed just one hit, but came in relief of starter Jared West and induced an inning-ending flyout to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard.
Ford owned a weekly ERA of 0.00, 1-0 record in two appearances, while combining with starter Matt Locus last Wednesday in the shutout win at No. 11 Rice. In 8.0 total innings this week, Ford surrendered just three hits, no walks and struck out two to hold hitters to a .111 average.
On the year, Ford is tied for the team lead with three appearances. He currently maintains an 0.00 ERA in 9.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Ford is part of a pitching staff that has shutout opponents in 60.0 of the 64.0 total innings played this season for a 0.84 ERA to lead the league.
Ford is the second straight Houston student-athlete to receive a weekly honor by the conference office as West was tabbed Pitcher of the Week last week.
