Cougars Rally for 8-7 Win Over Southwest Texas State
Snook Scores Winning Run On Steal Of Home In The Bottom Of The Ninth
Houston, Tex. - University of Houston junior leftfielder Josh Snook stole home in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 deadlock and give the Cougar baseball team an 8-7 victory over Southwest Texas State on Sunday afternoon. Snook also had a home run, a double and a walk to help the Cougars win the weekend series from the visiting Bobcats two games-to-one, but UH had to rally after trailing by as much as five runs late in the game.
Southwest Texas built an early 5-1 lead on the strength of a four-run third inning. Bobcat designated hitter Josh Newland delivered the big blow in the third inning with a two-run home run to left-center field. After Southwest Texas added another run in the fourth and Snook connected for his fourth homer of the season in the bottom of that frame to make the score 6-2, Newland homered again in the top of the seventh to extend the margin to 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh Houston answered with a run on a sacrifice fly and the Cougars then added two more in the eighth to make it 7-5. Sam Mitchell and Michael Bourn led off the eighth with back-to-back singles and then scored on a single by Gabe Lucas and a ground ball by Chris Snyder.
In the bottom of the ninth UH again led off with back-to-back singles, this time by Sean Allen and Mitchell. Snook then doubled off the right field wall to make the score 7-6. Lucas was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a potential double play, but Southwest Texas hit the next batter (Snyder) with a pitch to tie the game 7-7. Snook advanced to third on the play and then came home with the winning run on a steal of home.
The deciding run started as a squeeze-play with Snook breaking for home, but the pitch was high and wide to the plate allowing Snook to score the winning run, officially credited a steal of home. Houston improved to 6-8 overall while SWTX fell to 10-5. Cougar left-hander Keith Whatley earned the win in relief of Bryan Harris. Harris looked sharp on the mound in allowing only two hits in 5.0 innings of relief work of starter Austin Faught.
Houston will next face Texas A&M at Cougar Field on Tuesday, February 27. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the internet at www.tsrn.com.
