    GAME NOTES

    HOUSTON - Set to play for the 14th consecutive season in the Houston College Classic, Houston Baseball gears up to `Battle for Texas' at Minute Maid Park this weekend. The Cougars will take on Texas Tech (Friday - 12:05 pm), Texas (3:35 pm), and TCU (Sunday - 5:05 pm) over the three-day event.

    Rice and Sam Houston State will also participate, but will not play Houston.

    All three games will be televised live with the Friday and Sunday games set to be aired on Comcast SportsNet Houston and Saturday's game on Longhorn Network.

    Fans can listen free of charge on UHCougars.com for all three games as well as hear Sunday's game vs. TCU aired on SportsTalk 790.


    HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC - NUMBERS OF NOTE
    14 - Houston will make its 14 straight appearance in the Houston College Classic this season.
    18 - The Cougars own 18 wins in College Classic history, second-most by any team.
    27 - 27 Cougars have been named to the College Classic All-Tournament Team.


    QUICK HITS ON HOUSTON
    Houston is coming off a suspended game on Tuesday, which has the Cougars ahead of McNeese State, 5-2, in the top of the ninth. The game will resume play on April 29 in Lake Charles, La. Houston notched its second clean sweep of the year after improving its 2014 record to 7-0 with three wins over Michigan this past weekend and a shutout at No. 11 Rice last Wednesday.

    The pitching staff continues to impress, holding a team ERA of 0.84 through the first seven games. The staff has fanned 58 and walked just seven in 64.0 total innings played, while holding hitters to a mere .168 batting average.

    Sophomore Jake Lemoine leads the way with a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record having logged a team-best 14.2 innings. The righty has fanned 12 and allowed just two walks and eight hits.

    Junior Aaron Garza is 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA, while sophomore Jared West (2.53 ERA, 1-0), senior Tyler Ford (0.00 ERA, 1-0), junior Jared Robinson (0.00, 1-0) and sophomore Bubba Maxwell (13.50 ERA, 1-0) all have wins. Ford was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week - notching the second straight week a Houston pitcher has received that honor.

    Senior Chase Wellbrock has notched three saves in just 5.0 innings tossed. The right-handed closer has fanned nine and allowed just three hits for an ERA of 0.00. Wellbrock currently has 15 career saves, one shy of tying the Houston all-time saves record, set by Ryan Wagner in 2002-03.


    QUICK HITS ON TEXAS TECH
    Texas Tech will meet SFA on Thursday before facing Houston at the Houston College Classic on Friday. The Red Raiders enter the week with a 7-1 overall record and a No. 26 - national ranking by Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA. Texas Tech opened the year taking three of four from No. 3 Indiana before sweeping Oral Roberts last weekend.

    The Red Raiders are hitting .300 as a team, led by Adam Kirsch's .370 clip, followed by Ryan Long's .364 average. Tyler Neslony leads the team with 10 RBI and a 1.133 slugging percentage.

    The pitching staff has been solid with a 1.25 ERA, led by a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA by reliever Cameron Smith. RHP Dominic Moreno is slated to throw Friday against Houston. The righty is 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in two game starts. In 11.1 innings, he has allowed 13 hits, five walks with five strikeouts.

    HOUSTON vs. TEXAS TECH

    • Two teams will meet for the 86th time in program history.
    • Houston owns the all-time series, 43-42, dating back to 1973.
    • Texas Tech has won the last four meetings between the two schools, winning all four games in 2012.
    • The two teams met two years (2012) ago in the Houston College Classic with the Red Raiders earning a 10-4 win over the Cougars.

    QUICK HITS ON TEXAS
    Texas and Houston will meet on Saturday at 3:35 p.m. for Game 2 of the Houston College Classic. The Longhorns face Rice on Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. for their first game of the tournament. Texas, who is ranked No. 15/24 by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, respectively, holds a record of 6-3 on the year with weekend wins over Cal and Stanford.

    The pitching staff holds an ERA of 2.51, led by Nathan Thornhill's 3-0 record and 0.61 ERA through four appearances and one start. Houston will face RHP Parker French, who owns a 0.82 ERA and a 1-1 record in two game starts. In 11.0 innings pitched, French has fanned 12 and allowed eight hits and four walks.

    Offensively, Texas is hitting .251 as a club, led by Mark Payton's .571 average and eight RBI. Brooks Marlow follows with a .286 average.

    HOUSTON vs. TEXAS

    • Two teams will meet for the 125th time in program history for the fifth-most played series in Houston Baseball record.
    • Texas owns the all-time series at 91-31-2.
    • The two teams split the 2013 series, each earning wins at their home field.
    • Houston and Texas last met in the Houston College Classic back on March 3, 2010 with the Cougars owning a 1-0 win over the Longhorns.

    QUICK HITS ON TCU
    TCU, who enters the week ranked No. 12 by Collegiate Baseball, will face Sam Houston State on Friday and Rice on Saturday before meeting the Cougars on Sunday evening. The Horned Frogs are 6-2 heading into the weekend; earning season wins over Jacksonville and a sweep at the Kieberg Bank College tournament held at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. TCU's win streak was snapped on Tuesday with a 10-2 loss to Texas-Arlington.

    TCU's pitching staff holds a 1.75 ERA with six wins. The staff has fanned 73 in 72.0 innings, walking just 15. The Horned Frogs are led by three combined wins by starters Preston Morrison and Brandon Finnegan, who each hold a 0.00 ERA in two game starts.

    The Cougars will face LHP Tyler Alexander, who is 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts. In 10.2 innings pitched, Alexander has 11 strikeouts and just one walk to his name.

    Offensively, TCU is hitting .279, led by Dylan Fitzgerald's .400 average. Boomer White is hitting .375 with eight RBI to help pace the offensive production.

    Note: Houston head coach Todd Whitting spent seven seasons as the associate head coach/assistant coach at TCU, helping the Horned Frogs to seven straight conference championships and a 2010 trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

    HOUSTON vs. TCU

    • TCU and Houston will face each other for the 100th time in program history on Sunday.
    • Houston currently owns the all-time series, 52-45-2, dating back to 1973.
    • TCU has won six of the last seven, including a series win in Fort Worth during the 2011 season.
    • The last two times these two teams met in the Houston College Classic was in a 6-4 TCU win on February 11, 2006.
