Houston's record fell to 6-9 overall and a full one-third of the team's losses have been by just one run. Tuesday's game close any way you cut it.
Texas A&M struck first with a big four-run fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run by shortstop Tim Petru. Petru was red-hot with a 4-for-5 day including a double and a run scored. The Aggies made the the score 5-0 with another run in the fifth, but Houston answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame by true fresman Sam Mitchell and then a big five-run sixth.
The Cougars had three hits in the sixth but A&M walked two men and hit another allowing UH to bat around and take a 6-5 lead. Houston held the lead until the ninth when the Aggies rallied for a pair of runs on two hits and two UH fielding errors. The Cougars had a potentially game-ending double-play grounder but the team fumbled the exchange leaving all runners safe and still only one out.
In the bottom of the ninth Houston advanced a man into scoring position but stranded him at second base. Texas A&M improved to 5-7 with a second-straight win.
Houston will next face No. 4 ranked USC at home at Cougar Field on Friday, March 2, in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
