Houston Baseball Poised To Challenge In C-USA

March 2, 2009

HOUSTON - After six games on the road, the University of Houston baseball team will return to Cougar Field for four games this week against UTSA and Cal Poly.

Before the Cougars play on their home field, they will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for a single game against the Ragin' Cajuns, Houston's sixth-straight game on the road.

Tuesday's contest against Lafayette will start at 6:30 p.m. Houston is 35-10-1 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns, including winning the last seven games. Last season, against Louisiana-Lafayette, Houston walked away with a 14-8 victory.

The Ragin' Cajuns are 2-5-1 entering Tuesday's game, after losing two of three games against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg over the weekend. Alex Fueslier is scheduled to make the start on the mound. In one start this season, he has pitched 6.0 innings, giving up seven hits on four runs and striking out three batters.

Following Tuesday's game, UH will return home for a Wednesday match-up against UTSA at 4 p.m. The Cougars are 13-5 all-time against the Roadrunners. In 2007, Houston faced UTSA three times going 2-1. The loss in the second game snapped an eight game win-streak by the Cougars against the Roadrunners.

This season, UTSA is posting a 5-3 record after going 1-2 against Oral Roberts in a three-game series last weekend. Leading the Roadrunners at the plate this season is Aaron Powell. He is 13-for-34 this season, batting .382 with two doubles and three home runs.

The Cougars will cap the weekend with a three-game series against Cal Poly beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, continuing at 2 p.m. on Saturday and concluding at noon on Sunday. This will be the first time in program history that the two schools will meet on the baseball field.

The Mustangs are 6-1 this season. After dropping their season opener to Rice, Cal Poly has won six straight. This past weekend they swept Sacramento State with scores of 9-2, 11-5 and 6-2.

The Cougars are 2-6 this season after losing their last four games, all to teams ranked in the top ten. Houston lost to No. 6 Baylor, No. 5 UC Irvine and No. 1 Texas A&M this past weekend at the Houston College Classic. In two mid-week games, Houston defeated Stephen F. Austin and lost to No. 9 Rice.
