Houston, Tex. - The University of Houston baseball team outhit No. 5 ranked USC 9-6 but the opportunistic Trojans took advantage of two UH fielding errors to help claim a one-run victory Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field by the score of 4-3. With the win the Trojans completed a three-game sweep of Houston in the weekend series. The Cougars fell to 6-12 on the year while USC improved to 12-4 with its fourth-straight win overall.

After surrendering a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the top of the first inning, Houston's freshman starter Gene Flores settled down and allowed only two hits for the next five innings of work. The Cougars cut the margin to one in the sixth after Michael Bourn singled and advanced to third base on an errant pick-off attempt at first. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

USC came right back and scored two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 lead. After opening the frame with a walk and a single, the Trojans loaded the bases with no one out when Houston erred on a sacrifice attempt by Jon Brewster. Flores then walked the next hitter, Alberto Concepcion, that scored one run and kept the bases loaded. UH reliever Bryan Harris entered the game and induced a ground ball that was converted for a 6-4-3 double-play, but the man on third scored to make it 4-1.

The Cougars chipped away with single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Keith Ahrens singled-in Thanos Papavasiliou to cut the lead to two, 4-2. In the eighth Sam Mitchell was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Chris Snyder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Lucas. In the ninth Houston had two men on base but the rally was cut short when USC reliever Fraser Dizard ended the game with a strikeout.

Houston will next face nationally-ranked Baylor on the road in Waco on Tuesday, March 6. First pitch with the Bears will be at 6:00 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
