HOUSTON — For the third straight week, Houston Baseball has garnered a C-USA weekly honor as true freshman Justin Montemayor helped the Cougars to three wins last week, including victories over No. 30 Texas A&M and Baylor in the Astros Foundation College Classic en route to being named Conference USA Hitter of the Week, announced Monday.

“Justin has had a tremendous season to this point and achieved this weekly honor against very good programs,” head coach Todd Whitting said. “He is a young hitter who has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Montemayor led Houston last week offensively with a .375 average, going 6-for-16 at the plate in the fifth spot in the Cougars’ lineup.

The Austin, Texas native, drove in three runs on his six hits and scored four runs for the Cougars. He hit safely in all four games and is currently riding a four-game hit streak. He produced a multi-hit game in two of the four games this week, including two hits in the 7-6 win over No. 30 Texas A&M.

He belted his second homerun of the year with a solo shot to open up the seventh inning against Houston Baptist on Wednesday. With two on and two out against Texas A&M in the first inning, Montemayor drove in the game’s first run on a single to right field to put Houston on board first.

He later was a key factor in the Cougars’ five-run fifth inning, with a single and a run scored. He finished the week slugging .563 and stole a base, while not committing an error in 32 putouts and two assists at first base.

Montemayor is third-best on the team with a .308 average with 12 hits and five RBI, while leading the club with two homeruns.

Houston Baseball has now won three straight weekly honors to open the season. The last time a Cougar team accomplished three straight weekly honors came back in April 2003 with two pitching honors and one hitter of the week, but this is the first time in program history that Houston has opened the season with three straight honorees.

Montemayor joins fellow freshman second baseman Josh Vidales (Week 1) and senior pitcher Austin Pruitt (Week 2) having received a C-USA weekly honor in 2013.

Named Pitcher of the Week for C-USA was Memphis junior RHP Jonathan Van Eaton.
