WICHITA, Kan. – Houston Baseball senior catcher Caleb Barker has been named to the 2014 Johnny Bench Award Watch List presented by BaseballSavings.com, as announced today by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

Barker, a native of Keller, Texas, is now a two-time award watch list nominee and has started behind the plate in all 11 games played this season. He is the battermate for the nation’s top pitching staff, who leads with a 0.73 ERA, while posting six shutouts this season. Offensively, he has reached base safely in all 11 games and has seven hits, including a two-run double in a big win over then-No. 11 Rice.

In 2013, Barker started 54 games at catcher for the Cougars and finished among the Top 5 and second-best on the team with 43 RBI. He led Houston with 12 multi-RBI games and finished third on the team with 15 multi-hit games.

The Johnny Bench Award Watch List will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 15, 2014. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, 2014. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 17th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 26, 2014.
