Houston, Tex. (March 10) - The No. 25 ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team jumped out to an early lead while two pitchers held the University of Houston to just six scattered singles on the way to an 8-2 win at Cougar Field on Saturday March, 10.
An early 3-0 lead was all the margin the Titan pitching tandem of Darric Merrell and Chad Cordero would need on the way to a second-consecutive win over the Cougars in the three-game weekend series. Merrelll (7.1 innings) and Corderro (1.2 innings) combined to hold UH to two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five. It was the Cougars' seventh loss in a row and sixth-straight to a team ranked in the Top 25.
The Titans collected 11 hits and broke a 3-1 game open with three runs in the top of the fifth. Houston answered with a run on an RBI single by Seam Allen in the bottom of that frame to make it 6-2, but Cal State Fullerton added two more in the seventh for an 8-2 final. The Cougars fell to 6-15 overall while CSUF improved to 10-8.
The teams play the series finale Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live around the world on the internet at TSRNSports.com.
