Cougars Face The San Diego Padres In An Exhibition Game Tuesday In Arizona
Houston, Tex. - For the third time in the weekend series the No. 25 ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team jumped out to an early lead and had an outstanding pitching performance to defeat the University of Houston at Cougar Field, completing a three-game sweep on a rainy Sunday (March 11). The 9-2 final on Sunday was the eighth-straight loss for Houston (now 6-16 overall) and seventh in a row to a nationally ranked team.
A 43-minute rain delay in the bottom of the second inning had no effect on CSUF senior right-handed pitcher Kirk Saarloos, who was sharp in allowing only two runs on seven scattered singles and a walk while striking out 10. Saarloos earned a complete-game win in eight innings after the rain delay pushed the game past the established travel-curfew time of 4:30 p.m.
Saarloos' Fullerton teammates gave him more than enough room with nine runs on 14 hits off four Cougar pitchers. The Titans exploded for three runs in the top of the first inning and added three more in the next two frames to build an early 6-1 advantage.
In the third UH true freshman Sam Mitchell singled-in Michael Bourn to make the score 6-2. Houston then had identical two-runners-on-base situations in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, but failed to convert either of the opportunities for runs. Saarloos used the same approach to work out of both of the respective jams. He struck out each of the last two hitters to end both threats and had a total of five K's in the those two innings. With its third straight win Fullerton improved to 11-8 overall.
Houston will next travel to Peoria, Arizona, to face major league baseball's San Diego Padres in an exhibition game at the club's spring-training complex on Tuesday, March 13. The Cougars will then return to NCAA action with a game against Pac-10 power Arizona in Tucson, on Wednesday, March 14.
