PEORIA, Ariz. -- The San Diego Padres extracted some revenge on the University of Houston baseball team Tuesday evening at the major league's spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona. After the Cougars defeated the major league team in an exibition game last year, the Padres recorded an 8-4 exhibition win in a rematch on Tuesday.
The Cougars and the major league franchise have played a total of three exhibition games since 1996. The Padres are owned by John J. Moores, a UH graduate and former regent.
San Diego opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Chris Gomez singled-in two runs. The Padres then added another run in the second and four in the third to build an 8-0 advantage.
The Cougars scored four runs in the sixth off Jeremy Powell, a Padres' non-roster invitee who spent parts of three seasons in the major leagues with the Montreal Expos. After freshman Keith Ahrens slugged his second hit of the day, Michael Bourn drew a walk with no outs. Keith Whatley, Gabe Lucas and Hyung Cho then all hit consecutive singles to score two. Ground outs then scored two more to make it 8-4.
Houston returns to official NCAA play on Wednesday, March 14. The Cougars will face Pac-10 power Arizona to conclude it's spring break road trip. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Tucson.
