PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After helping Houston Baseball to a 2-0 shutout win on Sunday at No. 10 Baylor, senior starter John King has been tabbed the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
King was lights out, tossing his second straight complete game in as many starts to move to 2-0 on the year. The senior held Baylor scoreless for his first career complete game shutout as a Cougar.
Houston Baseball went 2-2 last week with win a midweek shutout of PVAMU, before falling 1-2 in a road series at No. 10 Baylor.
King’s performance was the highlight of the weekend as the Missouri City, Texas native struck out five and allowed one intentional walk, while scattering three hits in his 9.0 innings of work.
King retired the minimum through the first 5.0 innings before two reached in the sixth. Baylor threatened in the seventh with a leadoff single, sac bunt and an intentional walk put runners at first and second with one out, but King -- composed -- induced a groundball and flyout -- to keep Baylor off the board. The southpaw went on to retire the final six hitters for Baylor for the shutout.
King’s first complete game of the year came in his second start in a road win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. King now owns a 0.72 ERA and is 2-0 in three starts. He has 14 strikeouts in 25.0 innings, while walking just two and holding opponents to a .163 average.
