Tucson, Ariz. -- The University of Houston baseball team used a 15-hit attack to defeat Pac-10 power Arizona 9-3 Wednesday night on the road in Tucson. With the victory UH snapped an eight-game losing streak that dated back to February 25.
Fresh-off an exhibition game against professional players from the San Diego Padres organization the day before in Peoria, Arizona, the Cougars feasted on 15 hits off six different Arizona pitchers at Sancat Field on the UA campus.
True freshman Hyung Cho, who was making his first start since February 24 because of nagging injuries, slugged a career-high four hits, drew a walk, drove in three runs and scored twice in five trips to the plate. Senior second baseman Sean Allen went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run. In addition to the hitting, the Cougar offense patiently drew 10 walks and took advantage of four Wildcat fielding errors to score in each of the first five innings and six of the first seven.
Houston also got solid middle relief work from left-handers Nick Torina and Brian Henderson, who each worked 3.0 innings and held Arizona to just one run on three scattered hits. Torina picked up his first win of the season working in relief of freshman starting pitcher Michael Reiss who was making his NCAA Division I debut.
UH improved to 7-16 overall and avoided its longest losing streak since 1980. Arizona fell to 16-12. The Cougars will next open Conference USA regular season action with a three-game home series against Southern Miss starting on Friday, March 16. Game times will be 7:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday, respectively.
