Cougars Move To 2-0 In Conference USA Action

  • Box Score

Houston, TX - University of Houston true freshman pitcher Austin Faught scattered six singles without allowing a walk and struck out a career-high eight batters on the way to throwing a complete game shutout over No. 24 ranked Southern Miss Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field. With a 6-0 win Houston (9-16) posted its third-straight victory and remained undefeated in Conference USA action with a 2-0 league record.

Faught, a former Texas high school player of the year from nearby Jersey Village, used the complete game performance for his first career win at the Division I level. He held the Golden Eagles to just seven base runners, including one UH fielding error, and only two of those adanced to second base. With the help of two Cougar double plays, the left-hander had six 1-2-3 innings.

He began the top of the ninth with a strikeout but the shutout and complete game seemed in jeopardy when the next two hitters clubbed back-to-back base hits. Faught however worked his way out of the jam by striking out each of the next two men he faced. After beginning the year in the bullpen and moving to the starting rotation just three weeks ago, Faught improved his won-loss record to 1-4.

With his battery mate Chris Snyder leading the way on offense, Faught had more than enough support. Snyder slugged a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning that scored two runs. Later with Houston leading 5-0, the sophomore receiver hit his team-leading seventh home run in the sixth to finish the day with three hits and three RBI.

Houston improved to 9-16 overall while Southern Miss fell to 13-8 on the year and 0-2 in conference. The finale of the three-game series will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live around on the world on the internet at www.tsrnSports.com.
