MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- The University of Houston baseball team remained undefeated in Conference USA action with its fourth-straight league victory and sixth win in a row overall, defeating Memphis by a score of 3-1 Friday night at the USA Baseball complex in Millington, Tennessee.
The Cougar offense scratched out three runs on seven hits and four UH pitchers made it stand up as Houston moved to 4-0 in C-USA and remain in sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Cougars scored a run in the top of the fifth when freshman Sam Mitchell slugged a one-out single, stole second base and then advanced to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches. In the top of seventh freshman Michael Bourn led off with a walk and scored when Mitchell doubled to the gap in left-centerfield. Mitchell then scored on a two-out single by sophomore Chris Snyder to give UH a 3-0 advantage.
That was all the room Houston freshman starting pitcher Brad Sullivan would need. The right-hander from Nederland, Texas, fired 6.0 shut out innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. Sullivan gave way to relievers Keith Whatley and Jared Grein as Memphis rallied for a run in the eighth. In the ninth closer Matt Hooper struck the side to earn his third save in as many appearances in the past week.
Houston improved to 12-16 overall and 4-0 in conference. Memphis fell to 12-7 on the year 1-3 in C-USA. The teams will play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
