HOUSTON - University of Houston southpaw pitcher Wes Musick was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing eight shutout innings to lead the Cougars to victory over UCF in the middle game of a three-game series last weekend.
It's the first career weekly award for the freshman pitcher. Musick picked up his fourth win of the season and tied a career high in strikeouts, fanning 10 batters for the second time in his past three starts. The Lufkin native allowed only seven Golden Knights to reach base in his eight innings of work, scattering five hits and walking only one.
Musick struck out at least one batter in seven different innings. He retired 10 of 11 early in the game and finished strong, sending down eight of the last nine he faced.
East Carolina junior outfielder Harrison Eldridge was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week.
The Cougars return to action when they face Lamar at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Earlier this season, UH enjoyed a 7-0 win over the Cardinals at Cougar Field.
