PREVIEW: Baseball Travels to Marshall for Three-Game C-USA Series

    HOUSTON -- University of Houston Baseball will embark on its second straight C-USA road series when it travels to Charleston, W.Va. to take on Marshall in a three-game league series this weekend at Appalachian Power Park.

    The series is slated to begin Friday at 1:05 p.m. CT, continue Saturday at 1:05 p.m. CT and conclude on Sunday at 9:05 a.m. CT.
     
    No. 19 Houston returns to league play with a 23-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark against C-USA opponents after earning a 2-1 series win over Memphis on the road a week ago.
     
    The Cougars are coming off a tough 4-1 midweek loss to in-state rival, Sam Houston State, on Wednesday, despite a career-long 7.1 inning effort by sophomore Aaron Garza.
     
    QUICK HITS ON HOUSTON
    ·      Houston is hitting .276, led by three players over the .300 mark. Freshman Justin Montemayor paces the team with a .325 average, followed by freshmen Kyle Kirk (.309) and Josh Vidales (.301).
    ·      Juniors Caleb Barker (25) and Frankie Ratcliff (23) lead the team in RBI, while Montemayor has scored a team-leading 23 runs scored.
    ·      The Cougar pitching staff holds a 2.89 ERA with 23 wins and seven saves.
    ·      Among the weekend starters, senior Austin Pruitt paces the squad with a 6-1 record, a 2.09 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 51.2 innings pitched.
    ·      Junior Daniel Poncedeleon has won his last four straight Friday starts for a 4-2 record and a 2.62 ERA and is second-best on the team with 42 strikeouts in 44.2 innings.
    ·      Freshman Jake Lemoine holds a team-low 1.72 ERA in 31.1 innings for a 4-1 record.
    ·      Out of the pen, junior Chase Wellbrock has made 10 appearances and leads the team with four saves, while fanning 20 in 20.2 innings.

    ·      The staff has fanned 203 hitters, while only walking 72.
