PREVIEW: Baseball Travels to Marshall for Three-Game C-USA Series
Cougars and Thundering Herd to meet in Charleston, West Virginia this weekend

HOUSTON -- University of Houston Baseball will embark on its second straight C-USA road series when it travels to Charleston, W.Va. to take on Marshall in a three-game league series this weekend at Appalachian Power Park.
All-Time: Houston and Marshall will meet for the 25th time on Friday. Series History: The Cougars own the series, 19-5. Last Meeting: The last meeting between the two schools came a year ago when Houston won 4-3 and took the 2012 series at Cougar Field.
Probable Starters: Houston: TBA Marshall: RHP Michael Taylor (3-2, 2.28 ERA)
The series is slated to begin Friday at 1:05 p.m. CT, continue Saturday at 1:05 p.m. CT and conclude on Sunday at 9:05 a.m. CT.
No. 19 Houston returns to league play with a 23-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark against C-USA opponents after earning a 2-1 series win over Memphis on the road a week ago.
The Cougars are coming off a tough 4-1 midweek loss to in-state rival, Sam Houston State, on Wednesday, despite a career-long 7.1 inning effort by sophomore Aaron Garza.
QUICK HITS ON HOUSTON · Houston is hitting .276, led by three players over the .300 mark. Freshman Justin Montemayor paces the team with a .325 average, followed by freshmen Kyle Kirk (.309) and Josh Vidales (.301). · Juniors Caleb Barker (25) and Frankie Ratcliff (23) lead the team in RBI, while Montemayor has scored a team-leading 23 runs scored. · The Cougar pitching staff holds a 2.89 ERA with 23 wins and seven saves. · Among the weekend starters, senior Austin Pruitt paces the squad with a 6-1 record, a 2.09 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 51.2 innings pitched. · Junior Daniel Poncedeleon has won his last four straight Friday starts for a 4-2 record and a 2.62 ERA and is second-best on the team with 42 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. · Freshman Jake Lemoine holds a team-low 1.72 ERA in 31.1 innings for a 4-1 record. · Out of the pen, junior Chase Wellbrock has made 10 appearances and leads the team with four saves, while fanning 20 in 20.2 innings. · Junior Tyler Ford is 2-0 with one save and 1.93 ERA out of the pen with a team-leading 11 appearances. · The staff has fanned 203 hitters, while only walking 72.
QUICK HITS ON MARSHALL · Marshall enters the weekend series with an 11-17 overall record and a 1-2 mark in league play. · Marshall is hitting .262 as a team, led by Andrew Dundon's .327 average, while Nathan Gomez and Eric Escobedo pace the team with 15 RBI each. · The team has drawn 99 walks and struck out 177 times, while committing 54 errors for a .949 fielding percentage. · The Thundering Herd pitching staff holds an ERA of 4.33, led by Saturday starter Aaron Blair with a 2.60 ERA and a 4-1 record in 34.2 innings tossed. · Also notching over 30.0 innings is Friday starter Chase Boster with a 1-4 record and a 4.09 ERA, while Sunday starter Michael Taylor is 3-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 23.2 innings tossed. · The team staff has seven saves on the year, led by Matt Margaritonda's three. · Marshall hurlers have walked 107 hitters and fanned 191 in 28 games played.
