    HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team begins a five-game road stint with a mid-week game against Lamar Wednesday in Beaumont, Texas at 6:30 p.m.

    The Cougars will start Barry Laird against Lamar starter Blake Ford. Wednesday will mark the first career start for Laird. The Baytown, Texas, native has an 8.10 ERA and six strikeouts in seven appearances on the year. Ford is 2-4 for the Cardinals with a 5.97 ERA. In 28.2 innings, he has allowed 20 runs with 20 strikeouts.

    The Cougars are coming off a 2-1 series victory over Conference USA rival Memphis, improving their record to 16-18 and 4-5 in conference play. The team scored 20 runs, while allowing just 14 against the Tigers in the series. The bats were on fire for Houston this past weekend, as the team combined for 33 hits in the series. Blake Kelso led UH in the finale, going 2-for-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored.

    Caleb Ramsey went 3-for-4, with two RBIs in Saturday's tough loss, and continued his success into Sunday's affair going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run in the contest. Ramsey is the team's batting average leader, hitting .375 with two homeruns and 24 RBIs.

    Lamar is coming off a successful sweep of Sam Houston State this past weekend. The Cardinals finished the weekend improving to 23-15, while scoring 23 runs and giving up just eight. In the finale against the Bearkats, two Lamar players, Kevin Roebuck and Pablo Salinas, drove in combined nine runs. Roebuck hit a grand slam plating four runs and Salinas scored five, four off two doubles and one with a bases-loaded walk.

    The Cougars have a commanding lead over the Cardinals in the overall series, 48-23. In last season's two meetings each team earned a win. The Cougars are 18-10 all-time when visiting Lamar. Following Wednesday's game, Lamar will travel to Cougar Field for an April 28 meeting.



    Houston will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a three-game series against Southern Miss, April 21-23. They will then play a mid-week contest at Sam Houston State on April 27 before returning to Cougar Field for the rematch with Lamar.
