PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After hitting .500 and helping Houston Baseball to three wins last week, senior Casey Grayson has been honored as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.
Grayson finished the week 6-for-12 (.500) and recorded a team-best four runs scored and drove in two with a homerun and double. He also slugged .833 and notched an on-base percentage of .667 after walking six times.
The Cypress, Texas native also extended his on-base streak to a total of 13 consecutive games (dating back to March 30) while improving his hit streak to eight games.
Grayson notched a hit in all four games this last week, including a career-best night in Game 2 vs. USF – tallying three hits and two RBI – which included his fourth homerun of the year.
Accompanying his stick at the plate, Grayson also played an errorless first base with 31 putouts for a fielding percentage of 1.000.
Last week at Sam Houston State, Grayson singled and walked three times (a career high). In Friday’s win over USF, Grayson drew a huge one-out walk in the eighth that extended the come-from-behind inning. In Game 2, he belted a two-run homerun on the first pitch he saw that trimmed Houston’s early deficit to 4-2 – later finishing with three hits.
In the rubber game vs. USF, Grayson doubled and walked – scoring two of Houston’s five runs. He led off the fourth with a double and later scored on an RBI-single. In the eighth with the Cougars down 3-2, Grayson drew another key one-out walk to extend the inning and put runners in scoring position – which later led to three runs.
The senior notched a hit in his first at-bat in three of the four games.
Grayson upped his season average from .299 to .317 this week and continues to pace the team with 24 RBI, 10 doubles, four homeruns, 32 walks and a .489 slugging percentage.
Grayson becomes the third Player of the Week for Houston this season as Frankie Ratcliff (March 10) and Kyle Survance (March 31) were previously honored. A total of six Cougars have been named either Player or Pitcher of the Week as pitchers Jared West (Feb. 17), Tyler Ford (Feb. 24) and Aaron Garza (March 3) opened the year being honored for the first three weeks.
