PREVIEW: Baseball Wraps Up Home Slate on Tuesday

    HOUSTON – Houston Baseball will embark on it final regular-season home game this Tuesday when it welcomes Prairie View A&M to Cougar Field for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.  

    Kids Eat Free on Tuesday – first 100 kids (8th grade and under) through the Cougar Field gates will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, small popcorn and small soda.


    QUICK HITS ON HOUSTON
    Houston is coming off a 4-1 week, which saw itself win its ninth weekend series of the season over first-place UCF at Cougar Field as the Cougars improved to 35-13 overall and 10-8 in league action with two regular-season weekends left to play.

    With the win, Houston holds a record of 24-8 at Cougar Field. The Cougars are also 10-2 in midweek action with their only two losses coming against Lamar and Sam Houston State.

    Polling in as high as No. 13 for the second straight week, Houston is continued to be paced by its pitching staff, who holds a 1.98 ERA to rank among the nation’s best. The Cougars are holding their opponents to a .218 average and have fanned 313 and walked just 87 in 427.0 total innings.

    The bullpen has been the rock of late for Houston as seniors Tyler Ford (1.14 ERA, 6-0, 2 SV) and Chase Wellbrock (0.58 ERA, 3-0, 10 SV) are a combined 9-0 with 12 saves and a 0.86 ERA in 37 combined appearances.

    From the starting pitching end, freshman Andrew Lantrip (1.25 ERA, 4-0) made his first career start last Tuesday at McNeese State and improved his debut season record to a perfect 4-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.25 in 21.2 innings.

    Cougars who have also made starts this season and who fans may see on Tuesday are sophomore Jared West (2.76 ERA, 2-2) or junior Matt Locus (1.08 ERA, 1-0).

    Weekend starters Jake Lemoine (1.98 ERA, 5-4), Aaron Garza (2.29 ERA, 6-4) and David Longville (2.49 ERA, 1-0) all hold an ERA under 3.00 and have combined for 12 wins.

    Offensively, Houston is hitting .274 with 218 RBI and 428 hits to accompany 16 homeruns and a slugging percentage of .361.

    Senior Casey Grayson leads the team with a .330 average, 58 hits, five homeruns, 36 RBI and 36 walks. He is followed by sophomore Justin Montemayor with a .308 average and sophomore Kyle Survance with a .303 clip, team-leading 32 runs and 25 stolen bases.


    QUICK HITS ON PRAIRIE VIEW A&M
    Prairie View A&M, a member of the SWAC, is 19-27 on the year and 7-19 on the road.

    The Panthers are coming off a series loss to SWAC foe, Southern at home, but took two of three from Texas Southern the weekend before.

    Prairie View A&M is hitting .272, led by Dominiq Harris’ .323 average, seven homeruns and 48 RBI. He is followed by Robert Cossey’s .320 average and 56 hits.

    As a team, the Panthers have hit 28 homeruns, but have struck out 287 times, while holding a fielding percentage of .948.  


    HOUSTON vs. PRAIRIE VIEW A&M

    • Houston and Prairie View A&M will meet for the 10th time in program history and first since 1993.
    • The Cougars own a 9-0 advantage over the Panthers, which dates back to 1987.
    • Eight of the nine wins have come at home for Houston with one in a neutral location.
    • Houston has outscored Prairie View A&M – 121 to 7 in the nine previous meetings.

    Following the final midweek home game of the season, Houston will hit the road for a three-game weekend series at UConn. The Cougars and Huskies will open play on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Game 2 will begin approximately 30 minutes after and the series will wrap up on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
