HOUSTON, Texas - After collecting 44 wins and claiming the Conference USA regular-season title for the third time in the last four years, the University of Houston baseball team was rewarded Monday with a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Regional at Mesa.

The Cougars, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest Baseball America poll, face Sun Belt Conference Tournament champion New Mexico State in a game tentatively scheduled at 2 p.m. (CDT) (noon, Arizona time) Friday.

The Regional will be held at Hohokam Park in Mesa, Ariz., the spring training facility of the Chicago Cubs.

Host Arizona State claimed the No. 2 seed in the Regional with San Diego coming in as the No. 3 seed. The Sun Devils meet San Diego in a 4 p.m. contest Friday.

The winner of the double-elimination tournament advances to the NCAA Super Regional where it will meet the winner of the NCAA Regional at Austin. That Regional features Texas, Baylor, Lamar and Central Connecticut State on June 7-9 at a site to be determined.

The Cougars joined South Alabama as the only No. 1 seeds not to host an NCAA Regional with the Jaguars traveling to Notre Dame.

UH (44-15), which will make its fourth straight trip to the NCAA postseason, comes into the event as one of the country's hottest teams after winning 11 of its last 12 games.
