Cooley Taken in 23rd Round by Montreal Expos
June 4, 2003 HOUSTON - University of Houston first baseman Brett Cooley was the lone Cougar drafted Wednesday during the second day of the 2003 Major League Baseball amateur draft. Cooley, who was drafted in 2002 by the San Francisco Giants, was chosen with the 687th overall pick in the 23rd round by the Montreal Expos. This season, the Round Rock, Texas, native appeared in only 12 games after suffering a severe hamstring injury in late February. During those games, he batted .286 with three runs, a home run and six RBIs. Cooley became the sixth UH player drafted in 2003. Five players were drafted Tuesday with pitchers Brad Sullivan and Ryan Wagner becoming the first players in school history to be taken in the first round. UH was the only school to have two first-round selections. In addition, outfielder Michael Bourn and pitchers Danny Zell and Brian Henderson were each taken during the first seven rounds of the draft. The Cougars return to action this weekend during the NCAA Super Regional at Houston, hosted by Rice at Reckling Park. The winner of the best-of-three series advances to the NCAA College World Series.
