HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team grew a little bigger with the addition of three players during the recent signing period, head coach Rayner Noble announced Monday.

INF Travis Cougot (Spring, Texas, Klein Collins HS), LHP/OF Jimmy Raviele (Richmond, Texas; Foster HS) and INF Josh Stirneman (Cuero, Texas; Cuero HS; Blinn JC) will join the Cougars for the 2006 season after signing National Letters of Intent.

The group expands the Cougars' total signing class to seven players. They join C/RHP Luis Flores (Corpus Christi, Texas, Moody HS); INF Carlos Hereaud (Venezuela, Elkins HS); LHP Wes Musick (Lufkin, Texas, Hudson HS) and OF/INF Tommy Williams (Austin, Texas, Austin HS).

"This has the potential to be one of our best recruiting classes ever if we don't get hammered by the draft," Noble said about the 2005 signing class.

The only upperclassmen to sign with the Cougars to date, Stirneman joins the Cougars after two productive seasons at Blinn Junior College. As a freshman in 2004, he finished fourth among all Buccaneer hitters with a .347 batting average to go with six home runs and 60 RBIs in 57 games.

In 2005, the Cuero, Texas, native continued his high level of play with a .328 batting average, three home runs and 37 RBIs while playing all but one game.

Stirneman also proved to be an award-winner in the classroom as he was awarded the Dr. James H. Atkinson Cut. The honor is given to the sophomore student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Cougot posted an 8-1 record on the mound to help lead Klein Collins High to a 32-9 record and a berth in the Class 5A Region II semifinals. In addition, he also saw considerable time in the infield at third base and shortstop, where he is expected to challenge for playing time as a Cougar.

Raviele was an All-District 18-4A selection as a sophomore and junior at Foster High School and will provide some much-needed depth for the Cougars from the left side.
