Houston Trio Selected in MLB Draft

HOUSTON -Houston Baseball pitchers Trey Cumbie (13th/390), Aaron Fletcher (14th/431) and Joey Pulido (32nd/956) were each drafted on the final day of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Cumbie, a left-handed junior, was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 13th Round at Pick No. 390. One round later saw lefty junior Aaron Fletcher selected by the Washington Nationals at Pick No. 431 in the 14th Round. Senior righty Joey Pulido rounded out the drafted Cougars on the final day as he was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays at Pick No. 956 in the 32nd Round.


  • Houston has a running total of 149 drafted players and has had a Cougar drafted in 20 of the last 21 years.
  • Of the 145 players drafted all-time, 42 were drafted among the Top 10 rounds.
  • Under head coach Todd Whitting, in eight years, 32 players have been drafted and of the 32, 26 were undrafted heading into the University of Houston.

  • Finished the regular season with a 7-4 record in 16 starts
  • Tallied a 3.47 ERA
  • Tossed back-to-back complete game shutouts (March 16-23) vs. New Mexico and Memphis
  • Had five games of 10 or more strikeouts, two coming in conference play

Aaron Fletcher | LHP | Junior

  • Named to All-American Athletic Conference First Team (SP)
  • Named American Pitcher of the Week three times in 2018
  • Ranked fourth in program history with a 2.06 career ERA
  • Owns a career record of 11-5 in 62 appearances and 15 startsIn 170.1 innings, he has held opponents to a .240 average
  • Finished 2018 with a team-low 2.19 ERA
  • Finished 2018 with a 7-3 record in 15 starts
  • Made first ever start of his career in 2018
  • Tossed three complete games and notched a complete-game shutout vs. Memphis on March 24
  • Pitched 10 quality starts
  • Earned wins over Holy Cross, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego, Memphis, ECU, UConn, Purdue
  • Tossed a complete game in NCAA Chapel Hill Regional vs. Purdue to earn All-Tournament team honors
  • Helped Houston to four conference titles in his four years and three NCAA Regional appearances

Joey Pulido | RHP | Senior
32nd Round | Pick No. 956 | Toronto Blue Jays

  • Made 49 career appearances out of the bullpen
  • Tallied an 8-5 career record in two seasons

  • Was 6-2 in 2018 with a 3.55 ERA
  • Made 28 appearances, tied for the most on the team
  • Tallied six saves in 2018
  • Tossed a career-long 6.2 shutout innings vs. HBU on March 6
  • Had four of the six saves in conference play
  • Helped Houston to three conference titles in his two years and two NCAA Regional appearances
