June 13, 2013

HOUSTON – After being selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft a week ago, University of Houston Baseball pitchers Austin Pruitt, Matt Hernandez and Daniel Poncedeleon have all signed professional contracts for their respective organizations.

Pruitt inked his professional contract with the Tampa Bay Rays after being selected in the ninth round on Day 2 of the MLB Draft a week ago. Hernandez, a 23rd round pick, signed his contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, while Poncedeleon inked his professional contract with the Chicago Cubs after being selected in the 14th round.
Pruitt is expected to report to Wappingers, N.Y. with the Hudson Valley Renegades (A-Short Season). Hernandez will report to Tempe, Arizona (AZL-Rookie), while Poncedeleon will report to Mesa, Arizona (AZL-Rookie).
Pruitt and Hernandez both exhausted their NCAA eligibility, while Poncedeleon will not return to the Houston program for his senior season.
The trio were instrumental in Houston’s 2013 success, posting a combined record of 21-11 with Pruitt leading the way with a 10-5 mark, followed by Poncedeleon’s 7-5 record and Hernandez’s 4-1 record as both a starter and reliever.
