Davis, Cumbie Named to All-Region Teams

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball juniors Joe Davis (First Team) and Trey Cumbie (Second Team) were named to the ABCA/Rawlings Central All-Region Team, the organization announced Wednesday.

Davis was a First Team selection as the designated hitter, while Cumbie was tabbed a Second Team selection as a starting pitcher.

The duo led Houston to its second-straight American Athletic Conference regular-season crown and third in the last four years. For their efforts during the regular season, the Cougars were selected as an at-large bid to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.

Houston finished 2018 at 38-25 and with a 16-8 mark in American play.\

This award marks the second for both Davis and Cumbie in their careers. 2018 marks the sixth straight season a Cougar has been named to an All-Region team.


Joe Davis | DH | Junior

  • Named to ABCA Central All-Region First Team

  • Broke the Houston all-time home run record (35)
  • Belted a team-leading 13 home runs in 2018
  • Led the American with 62 RBI
  • Hit .318 on the year with 77 hits and 40 RBI
  • Slugged .554 with 18 doubles, second-most on the team
  • Had 21 multi-hit games
  • Led the Cougars with 17 multi-RBI games
  • Reached base in 22 straight games from Feb. 16 – March 27
  • Had a 15-game hit streak from March 2-27
  • Finished year with three straight games with a home run
  • Belted seven home runs in the last 10 games
  • Went 8-for-18 with three home runs, five runs and 10 RBI in NCAA Chapel Hill Regional
  • Belted a grand slam in the season finale vs. North Carolina (June 3)
  • Owns a .316 career average
  • Owns Houston all-time RBI record with 166 RBI
  • Ranks Top 10 in Houston history in doubles (44) and hits (229)

Trey Cumbie | LHP | Junior

  • Named to ABCA Central All-Region Second Team
  • Drafted in 13th Round by the Tampa Bay Rays
  • Named to All-American Athletic Conference Second Team
  • Owns a career ERA of 2.45 and is 22-8 all-time through 46 appearances and 36 starts
  • Had six career complete games and four complete-game shutouts
  • Struck out 234 hitters in his three seasons, ranking seventh all-time in program history
  • Led Houston with 110 strikeouts in 103.2 innings
  • Finished the regular season with a 7-4 record in 16 starts
  • Tallied a 3.47 ERA in 2018
  • Tossed back-to-back complete game shutouts (March 16-23) vs. New Mexico and Memphis
  • Had five games of 10 or more strikeouts, two coming in conference play
  • Made 10 quality starts on the year

The ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association), founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 9,600 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 75th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 3-6, 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
