HOUSTON, Texas - After leading the University of Houston baseball team to a record-setting season, catcher Chris Snyder was named as one of three finalists for the 2002 Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top collegiate catcher, on Friday.

Snyder joins Alabama's Jeremy Brown and USC's Alberto Concepcion as a finalist.

In 2002, Snyder led the Cougars with a .343 batting average and set a new school single-season record with 71 RBIs. He also posted 13 doubles while scoring 59 runs and was one of only four players in Conference USA to rank among the league's top 10 individual leaders in all three Triple Crown categories.

The Houston native was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Third-Team All-America earlier this month and was a All-C-USA First Team honoree.

A final vote among the national selection committee will take place during the NCAA College World Series. All three finalists will be invited to Wichita, Kan., for the 5th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Johnny Bench will present the award, while Steve Garvey will deliver the keynote address.
