Irving, Texas - University of Houston sophomore baseball player David Murphy was named a Conference USA Spirit of Service award winner. The winners, announced by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky, consist of 12 student-athletes that competed in each of the league's spring sports.

Murphy was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia in September of 2007 and while he has been in remission, Murphy continues to give back to the hospital that helped him through his illness. Murphy spoke on local radio stations as part of the Texas Children's Hospital's annual Radiothon and made other appearances on behalf of the hospital.

In addition to his volunteer efforts with Texas Children's, Murphy also invites patients to join him in the Cougar dugout, serving as batboys and to participate in the honorary first pitch. He has also served as a counselor at Camp Periwinkle, a camp for cancer patients.

A health major, Murphy made 40 starts during the 2009 season at first and third base while finishing the semester with a 3.90 GPA. He hit his first career home run against UAB on the third day of play at the C-USA Baseball Championship.
