MOBILE, Ala. - University of Houston baseball head coach Rayner Noble was named named the 2002 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings South Central Region Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

Noble, who begins his eighth season at Houston in 2003, led the Cougars to 48-17 record in 2002 and a Conference USA regular-season title for the third time in four years. He also guided UH to its 15th overall NCAA Tournament and second appearance in the NCAA Super Regional championship game during the last three years.

The Cougars posted the third-best winning percentage in school history this past season and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional before falling to eventual national champion Texas.

The UH skipper was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000.

Noble, who edged out Roger Cador of Southern University in the voting, now becomes eligible for the ABCA National Coach of the Year award, which will be presented at the organization's annual convention in January.

The award was voted on by the coaches that comprise the South Central Region, which includes seven Sun Belt Conference schools, 10 Southwestern Athletic Conference schools, 10 Southland Conference schools and seven other programs from various leagues.
