HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball pitchers put on a show Thursday evening in Game 1 of its annual Red-White World Series at Schroeder Park as the hurlers held each other scoreless, ending in a 0-0 tie following the scheduled 6-inning contest.
Winner take all Game 2 will be played at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
White was highlited by the work of starting pitcher and 2017 First Team All-American and American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year Trey Cumbie. The southpaw tossed 4.0 shutout innings, surrendering just two hits and one walk, while fanning seven -- including striking out the side in the fourth.
Sophomore Brayson Hurdsman relieved Cumbie in the fifth and fanned a pair without allowing a hit. Freshman D'Mond LaFond tossed the sixth and managed to work around a bases-loaded jam and keep the game scoreless.
Red was highlighted by the work of sophomore starter Fred Villarreal. The righty allowed just one hit and one walk, while holding White scoreless through 4.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Senior Kyle Ott, a graduate transfer from Baylor, tossed the final 2.0 frames, surrendering one hit with two strikeouts.
Game 2 will be played Friday at 6:30 p.m. Friday's game will be a winner take all, 9-inning game. There will be no Game 3.
