Alan Bishop joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program as its director of sports performance in May 2017.

In that role, Bishop plans and coordinates strength and conditioning programs for the team and for individual student-athletes to perform at their highest levels, both physically and mentally.

"Alan Bishop was a slam-dunk hire for us. When we began our search and talked with people across the country, the one name that came up again and again was Alan's," Sampson said. "Our fans may not see or hear much from Alan, but they are going to see the results of his work with our players. I am excited to have Alan and his family join us in Houston and see what he will bring to our program."

"I know coaches that have worked with Coach Sampson in the past, and I have heard phenomenal things about him and the way that he runs his program," Bishop said. "When I came to campus, I was blown away with the facilities and the commitment to the student-athletes and the basketball program. Once I saw the campus, this was a no-brainer decision. I am humbled and excited to work with Coach Sampson and his program and cannot wait to get started at Houston."

Bishop comes to Houston after spending the previous four seasons at Utah State. He spent his first three seasons with the Aggies as an assistant coach on the Sports Performance staff before being elevated to director of Olympic sport strength and conditioning coach in 2016.

During the 2012-13 season, Bishop worked as the basketball head strength and conditioning coach at UT Arlington. That season, he helped lead the Mavericks to a 19-14 overall record and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament after the team competed in the WAC Tournament championship game.

He also served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southern Utah from 2010 to 2012.

Bishop graduated from Utah State in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science and earned his master's degree in sports conditioning and performance from Southern Utah in 2013.

As an undergraduate, Bishop was a four-year letterman on the defensive line for Utah State from 2005 to 2009. He was a four-time Academic All-Conference honoree and was a five-time Whiteside Scholar for finishing with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher each year.

He holds certification through the NCSC, CSCCA and USAW and also is a certified BioPrint practitioner and a certified Kinetic Chain Enhancement Specialist.

Bishop and his wife, Jessica, have a daughter, Jayda, and a son, A.J.
