2008-09 Houston Cougars Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes
Texas A&M Corpus-Christi Islanders(6-9 * 0-0 SLC) at Houston Cougars (9-3 * 0-0 C-USA)
Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 * Hofheinz Pavilion * Houston, Texas

On the win over the Islanders
"The kids shared the ball very well and they went to the hot guy. We were able to get the ball inside to Cousin enough. Then Aubrey (Coleman) was able to drive at will in the second half into the paint. We did a good job offensively. Defensively, we did a good job locking them down for the most part. The only negative was that they got too many offensive rebounds. Give (Islanders Coach) Perry Clark's kids a lot of credit, they really hustled and worked. Offensive rebounding is work. We gave them too many second shots. It was the only negative I thought. I was pleased. It was a good win for us and one we needed. There were a lot of positives. We had nineteen assists. We are very unselfish. Guys will give it up to each other. It's fun to coach kids like that."

On facing UAB on Saturday
"I feel better going into a game off a win then off a loss. This is an entirely different challenge on Saturday. We're playing a team with four, fifth-year senior starters. They are thin in terms of depth but they're extremely talented. They have three or four really good ball handlers and guys who can shoot the basketball. From a defensive standpoint, they present a real challenge for anybody who plays them. A lot of people felt even a favorite over Memphis. They are a very good basketball team and all of their losses have come to good teams. They are a veteran, tested ball club with a coach who knows what he is doing. We're going to have our hands full and we're going to need three good days of preparation to have a shot. But, it will be a nice game to steal if we can somehow get it."

On the play of the bench
"We're trying to develop our bench in any way possible, and I we had some good performances from our bench. Horace McGloster did a nice job in the first half. Zamal (Nixon) did a really nice job tonight, defensively and offensively. Zamal's deficiencies have been on the defensive end, but he played really well defensively tonight. Defense is all about using your head and wanting to do it. He's never focused on it the way he can. We keep sending the message and watching tape with him. If he plays great defense, he's going to be on the floor. He distributes the ball, pushes the ball and is capable of scoring points. He's playing very unselfishly out there. He had four assists tonight."

On Qa'rraan Calhoun
"He'll lay low and not worry much about scoring if other guys are scoring. When he needs to score, he'll step up and score. He makes some great plays. He's got great vision. He's an excellent passer and the more he gets used to his teammates, it's going to continue. He played a really solid all-around game. He's getting comfortable with the system and his teammates. He's a very smart basketball player. When kids are thinking the game, it makes it really fun to coach him. It's like having another coach out there, and I like that. There's more to his game then he has shown. He does a lot of things. Defensively, he really pays attention to the assignments.

HOUSTON GUARD Aubrey Coleman
On the win over the Islanders
"We aren't satisfied with tonight's game. When we played Mississippi State, we didn't do a lot of the little things and that's why we lost. Even though we won, I missed a lot of assignments. When we play better teams, that won't work. I know I need to work on that. I know I did some positive things, but when we play better teams, that won't go. I just need to focus."

On the importance of defense
"We just need to execute and excel on defense. I didn't play good defense tonight. I know I didn't. I know I need to focus on that more."

On Qa'rraan Calhoun
"He's a smart player. He's phenomenal. He lets the game come to him. He looks to pass first and just take what he's given. He's really smart. I messed up on some defensive assignments, but he definitely helped me. I'm just glad to have him."

On starting conference play
"I'm very excited to see what we can do. We were picked seventh or eighth (in Conference USA). I'm glad we're underdogs. We're going to shock the world, one game at a time."

HOUSTON FORWARD Qa'rraan Calhoun
On starting conference play
"I can't wait. When it comes to conference play, I step my game up a little. I had a slow start at first, but it's going good right now. You have to be ready to play every night, anything can happen in conference. Anything can happen on any given night."

On his style of play
"I just go in and try to focus and just do whatever I can do to help the team out. I don't really think about it too much. If I score, I score but if I don't, I don't. I would rather get a win. If you're not focused, you're not going to play well."

On facing the Islanders depth and length
"It's preparing us for conference. We're going to play Memphis, UAB and UTEP, and they have a bunch of long guys like that. It's preparing us for our upcoming games."
