HOUSTON - University of Houston junior guard Rob Gray led all players with 21 points, and senior guard Damyean Dotson added his team-leading fifth double-double of the season, but it would not be enough as No. 22/22 Cincinnati took a 67-58 win over the Cougars on Saturday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Gray, who was sent home to rest with the flu before Wednesday's win against Tulsa, enjoyed his 10th 20-point game of the season and took the lead in the American Athletic Conference with 20.5 points per game.
Dotson, who was named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team, scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with a team-high two 3-pointers in the loss.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first 10 minutes and never looked back in avenging a loss to the Cougars in Hofheinz Pavilion a year ago.
The Cougars moved to within 39-34 following a Dotson 3-pointer with 15:25 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Bearcats used an 11-2 run over the next 3:12 and never led by fewer than six points the rest of the way.
Cincinnati connected on 10-of-24 shots from the 3-point line while limiting the Cougars to only 3-of-19 from behind the arc.
Junior guard Wes VanBeck came off the bench to score 11 points with four rebounds, while sophomore point guard Galen Robinson Jr added 10 points with five rebounds and three assists.
All five Cincinnati starters scored in double digits. Forward Kyle Washington led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, while guard Troy Caupain totaled 13 points with six rebounds and five assists. Forward Jacob Evans totaled 12 points and five rebounds, while forward Gary Clark totaled 11 points and eight rebounds, and guard Kevin Johnson added 10 points.
Following Saturday's game, Cougars hit the road again for a two-game trip to play at East Carolina (5 p.m. CST, Jan. 11) and at UCF (3 p.m. CST, Jan. 14).
From there, Houston returns home to play host to Memphis at 8 p.m., Jan. 19, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
