HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On his team's defensive effort
"I want to compliment the whole team on the defensive effort, because that's what we keyed off of. We only had six fast break points, but it seemed like we had a lot of buckets in transition and that's what broke the game open. We were getting stops and our main goal was to limit their threes. The hardest thing when you face a team like UAB is that at all times they have four guys on the floor who can hit the three. They can spread you out. Defensively, our kids really followed the game plan. I give our kids an A on defense. There weren't too many breakdowns. We held them to six offensive rebounds and we did a great job on the backboards. (Marcus) Cousin was a huge factor tonight. We got the ball inside to him and he really softened up the defense. He had 12 rebounds and a couple of blocked shots but he probably changed a half dozen other shots at least. Guys would get in there and hesitate, expecting a block because of his presence. He established his presence tonight. He can do it on both ends of the floor."
On Kelvin Lewis guarding UAB's Robert Vaden
"Kelvin (Lewis) is a great defensive player, and hopefully he'll start getting some respect for that part of his game. It's always good when you can limit a guy like Robert Vaden. He can beat you by posting up and he's not bad off the dribble. They have a very sound team that shares the basketball."
On Aubrey Coleman
"I have been blessed with a lot of great kids to coach, but he's a joy to coach. He's a tough kid and very independent. He's done a great job academically and he's done a great job as a leader. It's so good to see an outstanding local kid come here and do well. That's great for us and the University of Houston. Other local kids are going to see that and it's great. I would take a bunch of Aubrey Colemans. He is such a competitive kid. He's a team player, too."
On the upcoming schedule against UTEP and Southern Miss
"We don't have long to celebrate this one. We have to go to El Paso on Wednesday and then to Hattiesburg (Miss.) on Saturday. Both of those teams are legitimately in the top four in our league. To have to play out there (El Paso) and then in Hattiesburg within in three days is an assignment. Hopefully we can get lucking and come back with a win in one of those two games or hit the lottery and win them both. But, we have a different looking schedule in February, so you never know."
HOUSTON GUARD Aubrey Coleman
On his big second half
"I just had to get going. I had a little injury in my groin, but his is the type of game you just need to suck it up. I told myself I needed to suck it up and help my teammates. Kelvin (Lewis) did a great job on (Robert) Vaden. He was the guy we needed to shut down to get the win. Kelvin (Lewis) did a great job on him, and we did what we had to to help him out."
On his jump shot
"My jumper wasn't falling, so I was doing everything I could to get to the basket. But, they knew I would try to get to the basket. Coach (Penders) told me to focus on pulling up. My range is really good, I just haven't been using it. Finally, it dropped in a big game."
On the big win over UAB
"This was a statement game. We were picked seventh in conference. We are the underdogs. We just have to keep it going. We aren't happy with this game. We just have to keep building from this game. We just have to show people we can play, one game at a time."
HOUSTON GUARD Kelvin Lewis
On guarding UAB forward and Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year Robert Vaden
"It was a hard fought game. We were all tired, but we stuck together and stayed focused mentally. Coming into the game, I knew it was going to be a tough match-up playing against (Robert) Vaden. He was picked to be (C-USA) player of the year, and I wanted to match wits with him today. I made it tough for him today. I just wanted to make every shot tough. I wanted to be in his face and even when I wasn't there, I wanted him to feel I was there.
On looking for his offense
"I'm not really worried about the offense. It's going to come. Coach (Penders) says that the offense is going to come and just to focus on the defense. That's what I try to do everyday, focus on the defense. The offense will flow easier."
On the big win over UAB
"It was a very big game. Coming in, people doubted us. Coach (Penders) told us all week, come in and bring it to them. To be ready to fight and be ready to win, and that's what we did."
