HOUSTON (AP) - Morris Almond scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds to help lead Rice to a 71-62 victory over Houston on Wednesday night.

Almond hit 9-of-16 from the field and all five of his free throws. He also had two blocked shots.

Patrick Britton added 17 points and Lorenzo Williams had 14 for the Owls (7-7, 1-0 Conference USA).

Rice shot 53 percent from the field to 30 percent for Houston (9-4, 0-1).

Lanny Smith led Houston with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Lamar Roberson added 12 points and Corey Bloom and Ramon Dyer each scored 11 points.

Rice led 34-31 at the half.
