Houston Uses Fast Start to Defeat ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Taking advantage of a hot start, the University of Houston Men's Basketball team cruised to a 74-58 win over American Athletic Conference rival East Carolina on Wednesday evening inside Williams Arena.

The Cougars (13-4, 4-1 American) connected on 10 on their first 11 shots from the field, including six 3-point tries, to build a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. Houston sank its first seven 3-point attempts and tied its season-high with 13 treys on only 23 attempts in the win.

Houston drained 54.5 percent of its 33 field goal tries in the first half and limited East Carolina to only 29.2 percent to take a 47-25 lead into the locker room at the break. It tied as Houston's second-highest point total in the opening period this season.

Freshman guard Armoni Brooks scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. The Round Rock, Texas, native led four Cougars in double digits and added five rebounds with an assist.

Returning to his native North Carolina, junior guard Rob Gray led all players with 19 points, including three treys. Junior guard Wes VanBeck totaled 13 points with three rebounds, including three treys, and posted three rebounds with three assists, while senior guard Damyean Dotson added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his team-leading sixth double-double of the year.

East Carolina guard Kentrell Barkley led the Pirates with 13 points and added eight rebounds. Center Andre Washington scored 12 points with a game-high 11 rebounds, and forward Caleb White added 12 points in the losing effort.

• Following Wednesday's game, Cougars continue their road swing when they face UCF inside CFE Arena in Orlando at 3 p.m. (CST) Saturday.... Will be the first meeting of the regular season against the Knights... Game will be shown on CBS Sports Network and can be heard on KPRC 950 AM.
