Chinweze Gives TCU 55-54 Victory With Last Second Tip-In
Jan. 13, 2004
Houston, Texas- - Houston native Chudi Chinweze tipped in a last second shot to give the TCU Horned Frogs a 55-54 victory over Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion Tuesday night. Chinweze's tip-in came after Houston's Marcus Oliver made two free throws with five seconds left to give the Cougars a one-point lead. Chinweze inbounded the ball to Marcus Shropshire, and he drove to the other end of the floor. He shot a jumper over Houston's Anwar Ferguson from the free throw line, but his shot rimmed out and Chinweze made a lay-up off the rebound. Officials met after the game and ruled the basket was good. "This is a tough one to swallow," Houston head coach Ray McCallum said. "We had a good start and battled back. Andre (Owens) hit a big three-point shot and Marcus came through with two free throws when we did the right things down the stretch to win. "I feel bad for my team, they are a dejected ball club. We have to hang together because this is going to hurt for a while." Houston held TCU to 20 percent shooting in the first half to grab a 26-21 lead at halftime as Owens scored eight points and Oliver added six. In the second half, the Cougars extended their lead to 31-23 with 17:48 remaining to play before Chinweze scored seven points during the next six minutes to pull the Horned Frogs to within 33-32. Both teams battled back and forth the rest of way before Chinweze scored his last second shot. Oliver scored 14 points to lead the Cougars, while Owens finished with 11 points. Ferguson added eight points, while Bryan Shelton and Cedrick Hensley scored six points each off Houston's bench.
Chinweze finished the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds to record TCU's first double-double of the season.
Houston falls to 6-7 overall this season and 0-3 in Conference USA play. TCU improves to 6-8 and the Horned Frogs have a 2-1 C-USA record. |
