GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) Sophomore forward Danrad Knowles scored 16 to lead the University of Houston Men's Basketball program, but the Cougars fell at East Carolina 66-61 on Wednesday night inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
L.J. Rose 15 scored 15 on five of eleven shooting for Houston.
B.J. Tyson scored 16 points and Caleb White added 14 as East Carolina secured its first American Athletic Conference victory.
As the teams scrapped down to the wire, the Pirates (8-9, 1-3) made 5 of their last 7 shots from the field starting with Marshall Guilmette's first-ever 3-pointer to put East Carolina up 52-48. Terry Whisnant followed with a trey to make it 52-51, answering a long-range dagger from Houston's Cavon Baker.
White added a layup and a jumper and Tyson dunked after a Whisnant steal, putting the Pirates up 61-56 with 96 seconds left to play.
Baker added another three for Houston (7-9, 0-5) but the Pirates closed it out at the line, making 5 of 7 foul shots.
Whisnant finished with 13 points for East Carolina, which made 24 of 54 shots.
Houston shot 20-59 from the field.
Houston returns to the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion to play host to American Athletic Conference rival Tulane at 11 a.m., Saturday.

Fans can choose the 3-Point Pack and pick any three of the Cougars' 17 regular-season home games with prices starting as low as $9 per game in the Reserved 3 section.
Tickets for groups of 10 or more can be purchased for as low as $9 per ticket in Reserved 3 (Section 101-102, 115-116, 126-128) for 17 regular-season home games inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Groups of 10 or more can buy tickets for only $14 per ticket in the Reserved 2 (Sections 103-104, 109-111, 117-119 and 124-125), while Reserved 3 seats (Section 105-108, 120-123) are available at $19 per ticket.
The ticket cost per person falls even more for groups of 25 or more. Group administrators are encouraged to call or visit the Athletics Ticket Office soon to secure their seats.
