2008-09 Houston Cougars Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes
    East Carolina Pirates (9-8 • 2-2 C-USA) at Houston Cougars (12-4 • 3-1 C-USA)
Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 • Hofheinz Pavilion • Houston, Texas

    HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On the win over East Carolina
"It was a very good win against a team that I had a lot of fear about because of their ability to hit the threes from the outside and their outstanding point guard Brock Young who had 12 assists and only two turnovers. They have a balanced team, but our defense just took them out of everything. They went to five guards at one point because they couldn't run their regular offense in the first half. We got a lot of easy baskets in transition and off steals. That's what allowed us to open it up to a 20-point lead at halftime."

    On Marcus Cousin
"When Marcus (Cousin) plays aggressive and plays really hard and asserts himself, he dominates. He did some dominant things tonight. He was above the rim for rebounds, he wasn't just rebounding balls that dropped in his area. He was really assertive with his moves and even went to the offensive boards. That's a major thing we're trying to get him to do more of, he had three offensive rebounds and I bet everyone of them ended up as a basket for him. We still believe Marcus could be a huge difference for us in conference play."

    On Qa'rraan Calhoun
"(Qa'rraan Calhoun) is a stat stuffer. He does a lot of things well. There are times I would like him to be a little more selfish, but he's a true team player. He can be a point forward when he gets the ball. We are going to run things through him. He's a great passer, he might be the best passer on the team."

    On playing Arizona on Saturday
"I love to have these games in the middle of conference play. It gives you a chance to play somebody that doesn't know you well and you don't know too well. Arizona does some things that are different from most teams. They'll run when its there but they're a very smart team."

    JUNIOR FORWARD Qa'rraan Calhoun
    On his first career double-double
"I've been trying to get ten rebounds and tonight I got the chance at that."

On having two guys finish with double-digit rebounds
"If we do this every night we will go far and probably win Conference USA."

    On playing Arizona
"We have to come out and play when the competition comes up. We've been looking forward to that all year."

    SENIOR GUARD DaShaun Williams
    On the win
"When we play our game, it's a balanced attack. But, today we came out and played our defense."

On his focus on his defense
"For me to come through for the team is not to put up points, but to play defense."

    On coming off the bench
"I prefer that. The first five have been on fire. When we come in, it's all about intensity."
