HOUSTON (AP) -- Robert McKiver scored 19 points and six of Houston's first seven baskets were 3-pointers in a 71-58 victory against Marshall on Saturday night.

McKiver had three of those game-opening six 3-pointers for the Cougars (15-3, 4-0 Conference USA), whose lead was never fewer than six points after a 14-0 run put them ahead 17-9 with 14:13 remaining in the first half.

Dion Dowell made five of nine from 3-point range for all of his 15 points for Houston, which shot 42 percent (14-of-33) on 3-pointers.

Darryl Merthie also was 5-of-9 on 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Thundering Herd (10-8, 2-3). Mark Dorris scored 11, and Tyler Wilkerson had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Marshall led 6-0 when Kelvin Lewis hit a 3-pointer for Houston's first score. Marshall's lead reached 9-3 before Dowell hit consecutive 3-pointers to tie. After a dunk by Tafari Toney, McKiver hit three 3-pointers to push Houston's lead to 20-11 with 13:20 left in the half.

The Cougars led 40-27 at halftime and never let the Thundering Herd get closer in the second half.

Houston's Lanny Smith had 10 assists. Toney led Houston with six rebounds and three blocks.
