HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
On the game against UTEP
"It was a strange game. It was a game of runs and hard, tough defense on both sides. They just played a better second half then we did. We scrapped hard and played tough defense, but offensively, we couldn't get it going in the second half. We couldn't get anything going in the second half and they did. The kids played hard defensively and played their hearts out. But, part of defense is on the defensive boards, and we didn't clean up enough of those. Both teams were playing so hard out there, they were really competing. That's what conference rivalries are all about. UTEP and UH is a great rivalry. It's almost anybodies game whenever we play. We have tremendous respect for them and their talent, and their kids seem to have the same for us. They want to beat us, and we want to beat them. It's a great rivalry. It was a battle, it wasn't pretty, largely due to the defense."
On UTEP's large run coming out of halftime that put them up for good
"We couldn't stop the bleeding because we couldn't get anything going offensively. That was a little frustrating. We kept trying to get the ball into big Marcus (Cousin) and sometimes we got it in, he got doubled and he had to give it up. We got some good looks or drives to the basket and didn't finish. We didn't finish about six or seven buckets right around the basket in the second half."
On the crowd support against UTEP
"Our students were super. I really appreciated that and I know our kids did, too. Hopefully, we can keep getting the students out here. They helped us climb back into it. We were down 12 or 13 and got it down to two. If we could have gotten over that mountain, just one step over that mountain, we might have been able to pull it off. We just couldn't do it."
SENIOR GUARD DaShaun Williams
On the game
"We came out with the intensity, but we did not sustain the lead that we had. That first five minutes in the second half they had a good run and we tried to counter it but it was not enough at the end."
On UTEP's dominance on the boards
"They had 17 offensive rebounds. They had 34 defensive rebounds, and we had 34 total rebounds. That is the story. They killed us on the glass."
On playing Memphis
"The next two days we have got to have tough practices. We have to put this one behind us. We need to go back to the drawing board. We need to box out."
