2008-09 Houston Cougars Men's Basketball Postgame Quotes
    UCF Knights (16-10 • 6-6 C-USA) at Houston Cougars (17-8 • 8-4 C-USA)
Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 • Hofheinz Pavilion • Houston, Texas

    HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tom Penders
    On the game

"It was a great win for us because UCF had a whole week back in Orlando to work, and I don't think they ran one play that they ran down there (on Feb. 4); it was all new stuff. They're one of those teams that execute whatever they run, so they drove us crazy with some stuff on our defensive end, but we finally, in the second half, went to four guards, which helped slow that down.

"We did not have a lot of success using a conventional lineup. The four guards really saved us, and DaShaun Williams came in defensively and did an outstanding job. We also started to operate better when we did that too on the offensive end."

On play of Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis
"We decided to use (Marcus) Cousin more as a screener and hope that he would get stuff off the backboards and go to the foul line, which he did, but he wasn't shooting his normal free throws tonight. Kelvin hit three huge 3's that just broke the game open, and I'm so happy because he's been carrying a lot of weight mentally as all scorers do as they go through slumps. Even though he slumped for 30-something minutes of this game, he came up huge and made three 3's and knocked down both free throws."

    On UCF's Jermaine Taylor
Jermaine is a great player, and I talked to his coach a lot about his tremendous development. He's a kid that's always in the gym, and he's a class act on the floor too. He just plays hard, and he and Aubrey are two of the best."

On revenge factor after beating UCF earlier in the season
"I wish we hadn't beaten them by 29 down there, but we played a lot of our guys on the second half that hadn't been getting a lot of minutes and all that, but they just had a really bad game down there. They were just really out of sync.

"This has been a really exhausting week for us with all the travel and lack of sleep. I feel really blessed to get this win. We just walked through everything yesterday. We did not play live because our kids were exhausted from this travel. Now we got a chance to take a day off and get two days to prepare for Tulsa. Tulsa is going to be a tough game for us. These guys (UCF) beat them last week by two points, but Tulsa is a really good basketball team."

On winning a close game against a potential opponent in the C-USA Championship
"You've got 30 games during the regular season. You are going to have 5 or 6 games where you're just playing lights out, and it really doesn't matter who you play, and sometimes you lose. We played Arizona off their feet and dominated them in every area and had that tough loss; it was a heart breaking loss.

    HOUSTON JUNIOR GUARD Kelvin Lewis
On how UCF used their size to get him off rhythm

"They were a real physical team tonight. They were setting up touch screens and trying to post and being really physical, but we withstood it and played great defense and got a lot of steals tonight and made it tough for them."

On playing against UCF's Jermaine Taylor 1-on-1
"I just wanted to make every shot for him tough because he's a real good player. He made some tough shots and was posting up. He's real athletic and I just wanted to make sure every time he took a shot that he knew that I was right there. He missed some shots, but he made some too."

On how bad UH needed this win tonight
"We needed because we lost a Marshall and we had to regroup. But that's over with and we have to take one game at a time. We have Tulsa next and we'll be ready for them."

    HOUSTON JUNIOR GUARD Aubrey Coleman
On playing against UCF's Jermaine Taylor 1-on-1 physically

"I didn't really know if we played physical against each other. I was just trying to focus on hitting my jumpers, but on a couple of my shots he did hold on my arm. That's why I followed through on the rest of them just in case because he was holding my arm down (I told the ref that he was doing that). He's a good player and I had fun playing against him. This is a big win because we blew the game against Marshall. We had that game, but we blew because of bad mistakes. Defensively, I think we did great tonight."

On having a double-double at the end of the first half
"I didn't really notice it. I was just playing. I don't really get into the numbers thing."

On the play of Kelvin Lewis
"He played good. When that happens that takes a lot of pressure off me when he step up and make those jumpers. Early on he was hitting jumpers like that so that doesn't surprise me. He was kind of off at first because he was playing so hard on defense. He gives it all on defense and sometimes when he gets back on offense he will be fatigued. I'm just happy he got his shot back."

On how much of a physical game it was tonight
"Every time I tried to cut through I would get bumped. I was coming down on a fast break and someone hit me on the back of the head. On the free throw line I got pushed. It was real physical tonight."

    On importance of win tonight
"It was real important because the loss at Marshall was a real stump on the toe for us. This win was real important and I'm glad we got it. Now we can focus on Tulsa."

    HOUSTON JUNIOR GUARD Kelvin Lewis
On being a defender and shooter at the same time

"I do not worry about that, I worry about playing defense. It happens that the offense is coming in the past couple of games. I am working through it and it is paying off."

On junior center Nick Mosley's performance from the free throw line
"We expect games like that from Nick. He is one of the best free-throw shooters on our team. In practice he is always at the top from the free-throw."

    On contributions from the bench
"We have been having great team practices. Everybody on any given night can have a great game. For instance, Zamal had a great game tonight and we know he can do that on a consistent basis. We needed that tonight and it was a team win."
