HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Junior forward Leon Gibson and freshman forward TaShawn Thomas each posted double-doubles, but it would not be enough as Marshall took a 66-58 win against the University of Houston men's basketball team Wednesday inside the Cam Henderson Center.

Gibson posted career-highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Cougars with his scoring total while recording the first double-double of his career. Thomas finished with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his team-leading eighth double-double, tops among all Conference USA freshmen.

Things went well for the Cougars in the first half. After holding Marshall to 31.3 percent from the field, Houston eventually built a 10-point lead and took a 31-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

However, Marshall used a 26-5 run to open the first 10 minutes of the second half and never led by fewer than eight points the rest of the way. The Thundering Herd converted 57.6 percent (19-of-33) of its shots in the second half

With the loss, Houston fell to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in C-USA games. Marshall improved to 17-10 overall and 8-5 in C-USA games.

Redshirt freshman guard Joseph Young added 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting with a pair of rebounds for the Cougars.

Damier Pitts led Marshall with 15 points and added a game-high six assists, while DeAndre Kane and Dago Pena finished with 14 points apiece. Dennis Tinnon posted 10 points and nine rebounds, while Nigel Spikes topped the Herd with 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Cougars return to Hofheinz Pavilion to close out their regular-season home schedule. Houston plays host to SMU on Saturday and then meets Tulane on Wednesday with both games enjoying 7 p.m., starts.

The Tulane game on Feb. 29 will be part of Senior Night activities for guard Darian Thibodeaux and his family.
